Places of Interest - A99 to Wick
CLANN GUNN MUSEUM - At Latheron just after the hall on the road to Wick you will see the museum. There is good parking but if like me you love spending time in old graveyards please be careful as the walking is not always very good. The museum is truly excellent and if you are doing research you will be so excited with all you find here.
LATHERON COASTLINE - needs a mention as it can be stunning with the waters sparking blue on a clear day and totally dark and brooding when the sky is overcast.
WATERLINES MUSUEM - Lybster is a small fishing village which has very well planned fishing museum. The kiddies can have fun peeking into holes in the barrels to see if there are any fish inside... There is a film show of the coastline and bird colonies which is worth watching. Last time we were there a local gentleman was working on an old fishing boat and it might interest you to see how it is constructed. Here again if you fancy a cup of tea or even a warming plate of soup you will be made welcome in the tea rooms. This museum catered quite well for disabled visitors.
Also while in Lybster check if the Lybster Gallery is open as it houses quite a wide array of pictures.
HILL O' MANY STANES - just between Bruan and Ulbster there is a road on your right which leads to the best preserved example of Bronze Aged Stone Rows. These appear unique to Caithness and they are probably over 4000 years old.
WHALIGOE STEPS - Ulbster, keep an eye out here for the red phone box as just down a little road to your right you will find a quite unique site! Set in the cliff are steep steps which the fishing lassies used to carry the baskets full of fish up from the boats. If you fancy yourself as being quite fit do try walking down these steps and back up again... do be careful though as the steps are exposed to the elements so often need restoration work. I reckon folks must have been hardier years ago!
YARROWS ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRAIL - at Thrumster you will see a signpost directing you left if travelling towards Wick. This takes you to an excellent archaeological trail visiting chambered cairns, standing stones and a ruined broch.
CASTLE OF OLD WICK - Just before Wick there are the remains of an old castle.
WICK - the town was originally called "Vik" which was an old norse name for a bay and the town was the main harbour during the herring boom of the early 19th century.

We intended that a map on each page would show you the location of the main visitor attraction in each area but regretably at present the web site provider has not responded to our requests as to how to get the location pin to show locations.
